Celebrate National Breastfeeding Month in Tarrytown

Did you know that the beginning of August marks the start of National Breast Feeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month? World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is an annual event celebrated globally from August 1st to the 7th as part of National Breastfeeding Month in August. Established in 1992 by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), WBW aims to raise public awareness and garner breastfeeding support.

In Westchester, parents can head to Tarrytown this week for a free community event that will educate parents, provide important resources, and offer an opportunity to celebrate all things breastfeeding.

Community Breastfeeding Day

The Phelps Hospital Community Breastfeeding Day is an event designed to engage and empower parents. It offers a unique opportunity for parents to connect with each other, receive personalized guidance, and gain valuable insights from dedicated nurses and experienced lactation consultants. It’s exactly what this month is all about providing resources and a space for parents to gain the knowledge they need if they decide to breastfeed.

At this event, parents can expect light meals, refreshing beverages, and exciting raffles while also enjoying music and having fun at one of their planned activities. Don’t worry; you can bring your little ones with you, and they can play in the playground or splash pad in the park. Professional photo sessions will also be available to capture precious moments with complimentary photographs for attendees. Photography sessions are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Community Breastfeeding Day is a celebration and an enriching event that provides a supportive environment for parents to learn and connect. Families and parents can have fun and enjoy a community experience while gaining valuable insights and forming lasting connections within the community.

At Northwell Health, families can find a variety of free programs like this one that assist parents at all levels. We recommend checking out their other free programs if you can’t attend this event.

Other Free Breastfeeding Resources at Northwell Health

We highly suggest parents look into several weekly and monthly groups at Northwell Health. If you can’t make it to the community celebration, we recommend checking out their breastfeeding support group, which meets virtually every Wednesday at 11:00 am.

The breastfeeding support group is a complimentary virtual support group for new families navigating breastfeeding. The group provides a space for new parents to ask questions, share experiences, and receive expert guidance on breastfeeding challenges. Participants are encouraged to have a support person join them in these sessions for a shared learning experience facilitated by an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

Are you looking for more of an instructional setting on all things breastfeeding? Their Virtual Breastfeeding Class Community Education, could be perfect for you. This comprehensive class, exclusively taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC), covers a wide range of breastfeeding topics for parents interested in learning more about breastfeeding.

The class addresses the advantages of breastfeeding, building and maintaining milk supply, breastfeeding techniques, comfortable breastfeeding positions, diet considerations, nipple care, and tips for partner feeding, and allows ample time for questions and answers. Couples are encouraged to attend together. Registration is required; for more information, parents can contact the Mother-Baby Navigator Office at (914) 666-1840.

These groups are just some of many offered to parents, and all are free. For a complete list of community events and classes Northwell Health hosts, visit www.northwell.edu.
