DIY Holiday Gifts

Welcome to Masha Dasha Designs where “art supplies become the art”. What started as a creative gift for my daughter’s pre-school teacher’s holiday gift has become an arts and crafts business! When my first gift was a big success, word-of-mouth spread and orders for other custom pieces began rolling in and so began Masha Dasha designs.

This holiday season gather the kids around and help them make their own holiday gifts – for teachers, friends and family members. I love making these items for the holidays and you can easily make them too. There’s nothing like “homemade for the holidays!”

Melissa Levine founded Masha Dasha Designs, in 2012. She creates one of a kind, handcrafted pieces using art supplies and recycled materials such as crayons, pencils, buttons and wine corks. She stocks some ready-made pieces, which can be found on www.etsy.com/shop/mashadashadesign. For more information see mashadashadesigns.com.

Custom Shaped Multicolored Crayons

These homemade crayons make excellent holiday gifts, stocking stuffers, or in another season, birthday party favors.

Supplies:

•Silicone mold in the shape of your choice. (Jewish star molds purchased on Amazon shown here).

•Broken, used, or old crayons

Directions:

1.Let your kids help you take the wrappers off the crayons. A tip — for stubborn wrappers let the crayons soak in warm water for a few minutes, then they should peal right off.

2.Break up the crayons and arrange them in the molds. The more colors per crayon mold the better.

3.Place filled silicone mold on a cookie sheet and melt the crayons in a low (225 degree) oven for approximately 10 minutes. A tip — keep a close eye on the heating process, you want to melt the wax not bake it.

4.Let the molds cool and then pop the crayon out.
