Fun for the Whole Family at “Dog Man: The Musical”
Are you kids obsessed with “Dog Man” as much as mine are. Then you have to go see the “Dog Man: The Musical.” Presented by TheaterWorksUSA, the beloved characters are brought to life in a heartwarming and fun show from now until April 30th at New World Stages.
Adapted from the “Dog Man” series by Dav Pilkey, the musical features the characters kids have come to know and love mixed with an epic and uplifting score by Kevin Del Aguila. We loved the mash-up of the Dog Man story with music that was uplifting, funny, and full of heart. It was awesome to hear tiny (and big laughs) as the characters of Dog Man, George, Harold, Petey, Flippy, ADHD, and Little Petey came to life, and seamlessly, took on multiple roles. Petey, in his villainy, was really fun to watch as well as his fun-loving clone, Little Petey.
The musical also featured a fun a play-in-a-play model, where George and Harold created the play and took us along for the ride. This included non-stop adventures where Dog Man had to save the city from Flippy’s beasty buildings, catch Petey, and actually finish the play. As my kids and I were enjoying the show, it was fun to hear other audience members guess what would happen or dance when a music number broke out. The set was true to the world of the book and engaging with its immersive props and costume changes.
A silly, fun, and heartwarming show, “Dog Man: The Musical” is a must check out musical for kids that celebrates reading, imagination, and friendship.
“Dog Man: The Musical” is based on the #1 bestselling Dog Man book series by Dav Pilkey, it has an original book and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila (Two-time Emmy Award-winning writer of the PBS show Peg + Cat), and music by Brad Alexander (Drama Desk Nominated See Rock City & Other Destinations) with orchestrations by Lloyd Kikoler and will be directed and choreographed by Jen Wineman (NY: Less Than 50%).
