While we have all adapted to the new normal, one thing we really miss is going to the movies with our kids. In New York, movie theaters are a long way off reopening and will likely look very different from what we are all used to. In the meantime, you can explore more of New York State by taking a road trip and experiencing a classic drive-in. Currently, many require you to purchase tickets in advance and have new COVID-19 procedures to ensure that everyone enjoys the drive-in experience safely. Four Brothers Drive-In, Amenia, NY: Movies are shown every day. Admission is $11 for adults, children 5-10 years old are $5.00 per ticket, and children under 5 are free and can only be purchased online. Food is also available for online purchase. Masks must be worn if you leave your car such as for the bathroom and food, and you must remain in your car during the screening. Location: 4957 Rt. 22 Amenia, NY.
Fair Oaks Drive-In, Middletown, NY: Currently showing movies on two screens. A car costs $20 or you can do a Carload Family Pack for $40, which includes Popcorn, drinks, and candy. Tickets can be purchased online at fairoaksdrivein.simpletix.com. Location: 365 Bloomingburg Rd, Middletown, NY.
Malta Drive-In, Ballston Spa, NY: Currently showing movies on two screens. Adults are $10.00 per ticket and children under 12 years old are $5.00 per ticket. Outside Food, Beverage, and/or Cooler Permit: $5.00 per car, per night. Location: 2785 Route 9, Malta, NY
Jericho Drive-In Theatre, Glenmont, NY: Movies are screened on Friday and Saturday nights. Masks must be worn if you are outside your car and no chairs or blankets are permitted. Hollywood Drive-In Theatre, Averill Park, NY: Movies are screened Sunday-Thursdays. Admission is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for ages 3-10. Lawn chairs are allowed but face masks must be worn if you are viewing movies outside of your car. Location: 9254 NY Rte 66, Averill Park, NY.
Overlook Drive-In, Poughkeepsie, NY: A one-screen theater that’s been open since 1955, Overlook screens movies from Friday-Sunday. They are also dog-friendly and require masks for the snack bar and bathrooms. The admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children ages 5-11, and children under 5 are free. Bay Drive in Theater, Alexandria Bay, NY: Movies are screened on two theaters from Friday-Sunday. The admission is $7 for adults, $3 for kids ages 7-11, and kids 6 and under are free. Warwick Drive-In, Warwick, NY: They are open every night for movie screenings and double-features. The concession and restrooms are open but only 1 person per family is permitted to visit at a time.
