The Importance of Vision Care in the United States
According to the National Eye Institute, “By 2050, we expect the number of people with visual impairment or blindness to double. Our infographics help illustrate trends in eye disease prevalence and steps people can take to prevent eye conditions and diseases.”
A study led by Rohit Varma, M.D., the director of the University of Southern California’s Roski Eye Institute in Los Angeles, found that cases of visual impairment and blindness in the U.S. are expected to double by 2050. Their analysis was published on May 19th in JAMA Ophthalmology. According to their findings, an estimated 1 million Americans were legally blind in 2015, with an additional 3.2 million having visual impairment and 8.2 million experiencing vision problems due to uncorrected refractive error.
While this reality seems stark, NEI Director Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., states, “These findings are an important forewarning of the magnitude of vision loss to come. They suggest that there is a huge opportunity for screening efforts to identify people with correctable vision problems and early signs of eye diseases. Early detection and intervention—possibly as simple as prescribing corrective lenses—could go a long way toward preventing a significant proportion of avoidable vision loss”.
Opportunities like the one provided this June in Port Chester are essential to ensuring that every member of our community has quality vision care and that we do everything we can to ensure that our vision is taken care of.
