Adventures on the Farm at Hilltop Hanover Farm

Westchester was once mainly farm land, and while that has changed over the years, there are still numerous farms that you can explore with your kids for both education and to purchase farm-fresh produce. This includes 13 Westchester farms along a 17-mile from Sleepy Hollow to North Salem, including Hilltop Hanover Farm.

Education, Fun, and Animals at the Hilltop Hanover Farm

Located in Yorktown Heights, Hilltop Hanover Farm is a working eight-acre agriculture farm that is comprised of a composting facility, farm stand, beehives, and more managed by The Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center. They grow vegetables, herbs and flowers and are dedicated to the development and advancement of sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, community education, and providing accessible food to all.

Families can enjoy access to their farm grounds where you can walk around the fields, see the cows and goats, or have a picnic. During the summer/spring, this offers breathtaking views where you can look out to see the patches of food growing as well as a stunning hilly view.

They have a seasonal on-site farm store where you can purchase farm-fresh food from May-November (open Thursdays-Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm) where you can purchase fruit, vegetables, native plants, and more.

They also have tons of educational workshops for families and interactive events throughout the year to learn more about farming. Some include the Kids Farm to Table event on July 12th, July 26th, August 9th, and August 23rd where kids will learn more about the real food and lifelong nutrition and health, organic growing, harvest ingredients, and make  seasonal lunch in their farm kitchen; Homeschool at the Farm on July 26th, August 9th, and August 23rd where kids will participate in hands-on field work, meet animals, see plants in the fields and greenhouses, and learn more about the farm; and the August Farm Camp (you can sign up for the whole week or one day) where kids can meet the animals, play games, get dirty, plant seeds, pull weeds, explore forest spaces, and more. Additionally, they offer a fun program for kids ages five and up called Tiny Farmers. Through this program, families will meet the farm animals, plant seeds, learn more about plants and taste fresh produce, and walk on their forest trails.

In addition to family and kids’ programming, they offer tons of programming throughout the year such as intro to insect discovery, beekeeping, pumpkin planting workshop, nature photography, community work day, and the incredible field-to-table outdoor dinner.

If you can’t make one of their special events, be sure to visit their public spaces during the week from 9:00am-4:00pm and during the weekend (during their seasonal hours). You and your kids will love the beauty of the greenery, access to 3.5 miles of their marked trails (dogs are allowed) among 120-acres of forested land, or simply visiting the animals.
