Memorial Day Weekend Events In and Around Westchester

Memorial Day weekend ushers in New York’s summer and gives us a special opportunity to honor our local veterans. In Westchester, we celebrate this occasion by stepping out with our families and showing support by attending events like ceremonies, parades, and festivals. This year, we get the chance to attend various family-friendly events in and around Westchester that are a wonderful way to show our thanks to our local heroes and the perfect way to start our summer season alongside our families and have fun with our loved ones.

Events

Westchester County Memorial Day Service

Westchester County will commemorate Memorial Day weekend on Friday, May 24th, at Lasdon Park, Arboretum, and Veterans Memorial in Katonah. The service is an annual community event that welcomes all. 

New Rochelle Memorial Day Services

New Rochelle will honor its local heroes with a two-day service event from May 26th to the 27th. On the 26th at 10 am, the city will decorate the graves of U.S. servicemembers at Beechwoods Cemetery, placing 3,000 flags throughout the grounds. On May 27th, the city will continue showing its respects to its local veterans with a Memorial Day ceremony at American Legion Post 8, 112 North Avenue. Attendees and speakers will include Andrew Sandor, New Rochelle fire commissioner and veteran, Nia Gooden, NRHS student and 2024 American Legion Oratorical Contest Champion, and veteran tributes to Lee Fadem and Dr. Michael Dunn. Following the ceremony, all attendees can enjoy a complimentary BBQ provided at the event. 

Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Playland Park

On Monday, May 27th, this special ceremony will honor military heroes. The event will feature performances and the debut of The Playland Hometown Heroes Banner Program, representing our community’s deep respect for those who have served. This program will showcase personalized banners along the waterfront until Veterans Day. Guests can also enjoy the incredible views of Playland’s 1.5-mile-long boardwalk. The evening’s celebrations will close out with celebratory fireworks. Playland will also kick off the summer start on Memorial Day weekend by opening Playland Beach and Pool. 

Jones Beach Beth Page Airshow

Head to Jones Beach for their annual air show on Saturday, May 25th, and Sunday, May 26th, which will feature a variety of performers. The United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team will make their 17th appearance, and other military performers joining the lineup include the U.S. Navy F-35C Tac Demonstration Team, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the 106th Rescue Wing NY Air National Guard HC-130/HH-60 Demonstration Team. The American Air Power Museum Warbirds, Long Island’s David Windmiller, and the SUNY Farmingdale State College Flying Rams plan to fly 22 of their college-owned aircraft. Civilian performers on the list include the world-famous Skytypers, their flight squadron of five vintage WWII aircraft, and Mike Goulian, the most decorated aerobatic pilot in North America. 

Parades

Larchmont’s Annual Memorial Day Parade

Larchmont will host its annual Memorial Day parade on Thursday, May 23rd, at 7 pm. The parade route will begin at Chatsworth Avenue Bridge, move through Palmer Avenue, continue down Larchmont Avenue, and end at Larchmont Village Hall, where there will be complimentary hot dogs for attendees. Head to the Larchmont annual parade to remember and honor local veterans.

Mamaroneck Memorial Day Parade

The Village of Mamaroneck and American Legion Post 90 are hosting their annual Memorial Day Parade this year on Sunday, May 26th. The festivities will begin at 5 pm in front of Mamaroneck Avenue School, run down Mamaroneck Avenue and into the Village, will continue onto Prospect Avenue, and finish off at American Legion Post 90, on 189 Prospect Avenue. A remembrance ceremony for the fallen will follow the parade and close the event. 

New Castle Memorial Day Parade

On Monday, May 27th, New Castle will hold its Memorial Day ceremonies and a parade. The event will begin at 10:30 am at the Victory Corners Monument for the Laying of the Wreath, followed by the Memorial Day Parade at 11 am. The parade will start at Ridgewood Terrace on Bedford Road. Participants will include local fire departments, police escorts, color guards, military veterans, school bands, scouting groups, community organizations, and more.

The Watchfires & Memorial Day Parade at Piermont

At the end of Piermont’s pier, logs are piled high and lit for 24 hours every Memorial Day. The fires are lit in Piermont and along the ridge of the Palisades. They symbolically light the way home for soldiers who have died in all wars and conflicts of the United States. The Rockland County Vietnam Veterans started the tradition of watchfires on the pier in 1987. This tradition continues today, along with the annual Memorial Day parade at the Piermont Firehouse. On Monday, the Piermont Fire Department parade begins at 10 am and will start in front of the VFW building at 562 Piermont Ave, Piermont. Join the Piermont community in honoring fallen soldiers and veterans. 

Sleepy Hollow & Tarrytown Memorial Day Parade

Hosted by the Central Veterans Committee with the Villages of Sleepyhollow and Tarrytown, this parade will honor veterans on Memorial Day, May 27th. The event will begin in Tarrytown, go to downtown Sleepyhollow, and close off at Patriots Park. 

White Plains Memorial Day Parade

On May 27th, 2024, head to White Plains for their Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The parade will start at Church Street, Downtown White Plains, and proceed to Rural Cemetery. This free event is the perfect opportunity for the community to come out and cheer on various local organizations as they march through the city. Following the parade, all are invited to attend the Memorial Day Ceremony.

Yorktown Heights Memorial Day Parade

On Memorial Day, May 27th, community members will gather at Yorktown Town Hall to remember and honor those who made the ultimate veterans. The parade will start at Town Hall and end at the Jack DeVito Veterans Memorial Field.

Hyde Park Memorial Day Parade

The Hyde Park Recreation Department is welcoming locals to its annual Memorial Day parade on May 27th. The parade will include marchers, floats, cars, and bands. The route will begin North on Route 9 and head toward the Town Hall. A ceremony will be held at the town hall after the parade, and participants and spectators are welcome to attend. Registration for locals interested in participating is now open, and information on when and where to meet can be found on hydeparkny.us.
