Check Out “Mental Fragments” Pelham Art Center’s Teen-Curated Show

Exciting news from the Pelham Art Center with the opening of “Mental Fragments,” featuring the works of 60 artists, curated by PAC’s Teen Artist Council. This marks the Teen Artist Council’s curatorial debut, which is on display from April 22nd-May 7th and features the theme of experiencing and going through changes, growing as a person, and experiencing a life metamorphosis. This includes works that highlight the first day of school, leaving for college, early adulthood, and beyond.

The Teen Artist Council was started in 2022 where young people are given an opportunity to play a leadership role in determining PAC’s programming, including selecting candidates to speak on a Careers in the Arts Panel series, curating Mental Fragments, and leading public programs.

The curatorial team includes PAC Teen Artist Council members Nola Brooks, Ain Maule, Amber Vizcarrondo-Abad, Natalie Nakayama, Kate Feldman, Violet Clearly, Nellie Koonce, Mya “Ghost” Antelmi, Charlotte Cohn, Caser Mallet, and Cararose Vitale.

“Curating is a wonderful experience in which you take art which already exists and organize it in such a way that in creates a bigger and even better collage of artwork that is pleasing to the eye,” said Mya “Ghost” Antelmi, a Teen Council Member.

Executive Director Charlotte Mouquin noted, “The Pelham Art Center is thrilled about the Teen Artist Council curatorial debut. I personally mentored a group of teens from the surrounding area starting in the Fall of 2022 to discuss exhibition themes, host an open call and create some exhibition parameters. The theme of coming of age, going through changes, and the concepts of home and leaving home were all front of mind this past Fall. Teens are in a transitional stage of life, and I expect this exhibition will mirror those thoughts by bringing together a variety of artworks and artists.”

Charlotte added, “The Teen Engagement programs at PAC also include Free Teen Open Studios on Friday afternoons, and a six-month internship program for four teens per session. The 2023-2024 teen internship application will be available 4/22 – 6/16.”
