Meet Lauren Medalie of Moms In Training (Westchester/CT) + How to Join
Moms are a force to be reckoned with. We figure out solutions to problems, even in the most dire situations. An example of this can be found in organizations like Moms in Training, a women and mom-led fitness and fundraising program that trains teammates to run or walk a 10K (6.2 miles) to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Over the past 10 years, MIT has trained hundreds of teammates and raised over $3 million for cancer research that has saved lives. This year, Moms In Training (Westchester/CT) are hosting several events and encouraging more women to join, including participating in race day in Central Park, along with teams from NYC, Long Island, and New Jersey. To learn more we spoke with Lauren Medalie, who found out that she had aggressive form of lymphoma when she was 23 weeks pregnant. She luckily received the best and safest treatment available and is on a mission to do the same for other women.
Interview with Lauren Medalie of of Moms In Training (Westchester/CT)
Westchester Family: How did you get involved with MIT?
Lauren Medalie: I ran my first race with Moms in Training (MIT) in 2014. I was living in NYC at the time and my older daughter was 18 months. I am not a runner at all so I was nervous, but I absolutely loved the experience! I got in shape, ran a race, met amazing women and raised money for cancer research.
Westchester Family: Why is Moms in Training important to you?
Lauren Medalie: Our family moved to Westchester a few years later and, in 2017, I got pregnant with my younger daughter. At 23 weeks pregnant I was diagnosed with lymphoma. Thankfully, my Oncology team was confident that the treatment plan would work and be safe for the baby.
Over the last decade, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) had funded the research that found effective treatment and a cure for my type of cancer. My daughter and I are alive because there was safe and available treatment thanks to generous donors and volunteers who cared and got involved.
I am now on the board of the Westchester/CT LLS chapter and Co-Captain for Moms in Training, an 8-week women/mom-led fitness and fundraising program that trains teammates for a 10K in June in Central Park.
Westchester Family: How can people join Moms in Training?
Westchester Family: Is there anything else to add?
