Don’t fall into the summer slide! Get the kids involved this summer with a program that is engaging and fun at Westchester Community College! The Summer Youth Programs are now online and offer children 7 – 17 the opportunity to engage in STEM and STEAM activities. The Peekskill Summer Youth Arts Technology Program and the Ossining Centers Science Academy teaches the scientific method and investigative skills that will enhance your child’s capabilities so they may advance in their studies and future career goals.

Peekskill 

The Peekskill Extension is offering tons of fun programming for kids to fully dive into bringing ideas to life. We break down some of the courses below which range from filmmaking to coding!

A new class that is being introduced is the Mixed Media Printmaking course that will introduce innovative ways to make homemade prints while integrating everyday technology like copy machines, computers, and jet printers. Ages 7-10; July 20-30, 9:30 – 11:30 am

Another new class is TinkerCAD for Kids which is a free web-based software that allows students to create 3D shapes and works of art. Ages 7-10; July 6 – 16, 2:30 – 4:30 pm; July 20 – 3, 9:30 – 11:30 am

Kids can bring their ideas to life with the Painting and Drawing class. They will learn about art history and various art techniques that will bring their creations to the next level. Ages 7-10; July 6 -16, 9:30- 11:30 am; July 20-30, 12 – 2 pm.

Coding for Kids allows kids to engage in computer sequences of instructions that empowers them to control robots and gaming interfaces. They will learn what is possible with computer coding and will be better equipped for the 21st-century world of technology. Ages 7-10; July 6-16, 9:30-11:30 am; July 6-16, 12-2 pm; July 20-30, 12-2 pm; July 20-30, 2:30-4:30 pm

Students will learn how to utilize a stylus and tablet to create texture maps for 3D objects, self-portraits, and compositing digital photography to create new cosmic vistas in the Digital Painting and Drawing class. Ages 7-10; July 6-16, 12-2 pm; July 20-30, 2:30-4:30 pm

In the 2D Animation class, students will develop their own drawings to build characters and sets to support the stories of their own creations while practicing 2D animation. Ages 7-10; July 6-16, 9:30-11:30 am; July 20-30, 12-2 pm

With Game Design, kids will harness the technical side of a computer programmer and the creativity of an artist to start building their own interactive game. Ages 11-17; July 6-16, 9:30 am-2 pm; July 20-30, 9:30 am-2 pm

Students will be able to produce a moving character of their own when learning the mechanics of Maya, an industry-grade 3D software environment in the 3D Animation course. Ages 11-17; July 6-16, 9:30 am-2 pm; July 20-30, 9:30 am-2 pm

If your kids have a love for movies, this Filmmaking course might be just right for them. They will create short composites of sampled images, stop animations, sounds, voice-overs, and chroma-key footage. Ages 11-17; July 6-16, 2:30-4:30 pm; July 20-30, 2:30-4:30 pm

Robotics is the perfect course for students to learn how to make robots move, make sounds, display lights, and more by learning the latest in electronics, coding, and 3D technology. Ages 11-17; July 6-16, 9:30-11:30 am; July 6-16, 12-2 pm; July 20-30, 9:30-11:30 am; July 20-30, 12:00 noon-2:00 pm

General Registration Information

  • Classes do not meet on Fridays
  • Students may register for one or more classes for their age group
  • All non-credit classes at extension sites, including youth programs, will be charged a one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $5.00.
  • All classes will be held on Zoom
  • Classes: 

2-hour classes are $178 (+ $50 lab/$20 studio fee) 

4-hour classes are $228 (+ $50 lab fee)

Ossining 

When kids sign up for Health and Nutrition, they will learn positive health habits, good nutrition, and how to keep a balanced lifestyle. Ages 8-12, July 27-Aug 6, 12- 2 pm

Kids will learn about environmental studies that will engage them in projects in recycling and conservation when they sign up for Go Green! Environmental Science and Justice. Ages 12-16, M/Tu/Wed/Th, 9:30-11:30 am

Sign up for Physics and learn the fundamentals. Kids will also explore the natural science of matter, motion and behavior. Ages 13-16, July 27-Aug. 6, Aug. 10-Aug. 20, 12-2 pm

Take on a new language by practicing conversational Spanish through songs, games, stories, and hands-on activities in Intro to Conversational Spanish for Kids. Ages 8-12, July 27-Aug. 6, Aug. 10-Aug. 20, 9:30-11:30 am

Kids and teens will learn how to develop a healthy lifestyle with Zumba for Teens (ages 13-16) and Zumba for Kids (ages 8-12) classes. They will have a great time with the Zumba routines and choreography. Zumba for Teens, July 27-Aug. 6, 12:30-1:30 pm. Zumba for Kids, Aug. 10-Aug. 20, 12:30-1:30 pm
