Shark Weekend at the Westchester Children’s Museum

Sharks are an often misunderstood sea animal — often seen as scary and ready to attack humans. These myths are often perpetrated in movies/TV; however, many sharks are actually picky eaters and prefer the taste of fish!

There is so much more to them (much of which we don’t understand), which is why we are so excited for the upcoming educational and interactive Shark Weekend programming at the Westchester Children’s Museum.

Held on July 22nd and 23rd, the weekend includes a fun roster of educational, engaging, and events hands-on STEAM activities. This includes Shark Teeth Sorting, Dissolving Seashells, Shark Trackers, Sinking Boat Challenge, Mermaid’s Purse Sketching, and Pinning the Fin on the Shark.

The Shark Weekend programming is a part of the Westchester Children’s Museum’s Big Weekend Events where families can enjoy and learn more about different themes. For August, this includes a Renaissance Faire Weekend.

“Shark Weekend is the latest in a series of Big Weekend Events, designed as a playful learning events for our community,” Thomas Sullivan, Executive Director noted.

Shark Weekend at the Westchester Children’s Museum include:

Dissolving Seashells: Kids will have the opportunity to learn more about the causes of ocean acidity on marine animals, the ocean food web, and humans as well as how to minimize its impact.

Shark Trackers: Families will enjoy using Shark Tracker technology to see shark activity right outside the doors of the Westchester Childern’s Museum in the Long Island Sound.

Sinking Boat Challenge: Kids can create a boat using aluminum foil and test it with marbles to see if it floats or sinks.

Mermaid’s Purse Charcoal Sketching: Families will use shark egg case specimens to create sketches.

Shark Teeth Sorting: Kids will love learning more about shark species and shark teeth. Each kid will also have the opportunity to take one shark tooth home with them.

Pin the Fin on the Shark: Enjoy this twist on Pin the Tail on the Donkey with shark fins! Kids will learn more about different shark fin as they try to pin the correct one in place.
