Women’s History Month Events in Westchester
Happy Women’s History Month! This month honors the vital role women played – and continue to play – both in history and our cultural landscape. It’s a great time to share this information as well as learn with your kids by attending a local event. Read on for some fun events that celebrate and honor the incredible achievements of women and their often over-looked role in American history.

WHM: Elisabet Velasquez, A Reading and Discussion at WCC
Elisabet Velasquez is a Boricua writer and mother of two from Brooklyn, now living in Jersey City. Through poetry, she shares her transformative narrative as a first-generation Puerto Rican teen mother and GED recipient, challenging traditional notions of success and highlighting the value in life’s journey. Her career began in 2009 at The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, where she joined the 2009 Nuyorican Slam Team. In 2021, after 12 years of sharing her work, she debuted her award-winning young adult novel in verse, When We Make It. Classroom Building, Room 100 – SUNY Westchester Valhalla

WHM: Tres Vidas, A Performance by Core Ensemble
This work is a chamber music theatre performance featuring a singing actress and a trio of cello, piano, and percussion. It tells the stories of three important Latin American women: Frida Kahlo from Mexico, Rufina Amaya from El Salvador, and Alfonsina Storni from Argentina. The text is by Marjorie Agosin. The music includes popular and folk songs from Mexico, El Salvador, and Argentina, as well as music by Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel, and Osvaldo Golijov. Breaking Barriers in Baseball
This event will have a conversation between Yankees broadcaster Suzyn Waldman and author Melissa Ludtke about the challenges women face in sports media. In her memoir, Locker Room Talk, Ludtke shares her fight in federal court for female reporters to have the same access to players as their male counterparts. International Women’s Day Event and Retreat
The International Women’s Day Retreat in Woodstock, NY, will take place from March 7th to 9th. This weekend is focused on women’s wellness and cultural celebration, featuring activities like yoga, sound baths, and a cooking class. A key event on March 8th will be held at the Woodstock Playhouse, showcasing performances from various cultural artists and keynote speakers. Echoes of Silence: Immersive Ballet by MorDance
MorDance presents Echoes of Silence, an immersive ballet that pays tribute to influential female singer-songwriters from the 1960s and 1970s. Set in the galleries of the Hudson River Museum, the performance features live music by a guitarist and vocalist, exploring themes of resilience and transformation. In addition to the performance, guests can participate in a bilingual sketching workshop with artist Carolina Amarillo and view current exhibitions. Women and the American Revolution
In recognition of Women’s History Month, the program titled “Women and the American Revolution” is being organized by St. Pauls Church. This event will feature brief, first-person reenactments that showcase the diverse experiences of women who lived during the era of the American Revolution. ‘Extraordinary Women’ Film Series: “WITHOUT A WHISPER” (2020) & “WOMEN ORGANIZE!” (2000)
Before the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls in 1848, Haudenosaunee women held strong political and spiritual influence in their communities. The film WITHOUT A WHISPER follows Mohawk Bear Clan Mother Louise Herne and Professor Sally Roesch Wagner as they aim to reshape the historical understanding of the beginnings of women’s rights in the United States. It has a runtime of 27 minutes.
Another film, WOMEN ORGANIZE!, showcases women organizers from across the U.S. who are engaged in global efforts for racial, social, and economic justice.
