This March, “The Sound of Music” will bring its timeless charm and heartwarming melodies to the vibrant stage in Yorktown, setting the tone for an amazing season. Yorktown Stage has entertained audiences for 21 seasons with its own creative shows. This lively theater offers a variety of live performances, including popular Broadway musicals, classic revivals, and fun children’s musicals, making sure there’s something for everyone.

Yorktown Stage Kids features talented young performers aged 8 to 18 in their annual youth theater shows. This program has gained recognition and has made the theater a top choice for family entertainment in the area. In summer, the theater hosts an eight-week camp for children aged 5 to 13. The camp is known for its hands-on arts education, allowing kids to be creative while receiving professional training in the performing arts.

The Just Dance! Program also offers classes in various dance styles, like hip-hop, ballet, and Broadway dance, taught by experienced instructors in a welcoming and family-friendly space. Aspiring performers can also take individual voice and dance lessons with the theater’s skilled artistic directors and choreographers, who provide tailored support to each student’s unique talents.

What Families Can Expect

Set against the iconic backdrop of Salzburg, Austria, in 1938, this beloved classic tells the inspiring story of Maria, a spirited young woman who becomes a governess in the home of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his seven children. Expect to be drawn in by the timeless melodies and heartfelt moments as themes of love, resilience, and the power of music come to life before your eyes.

This beloved musical features timeless songs by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Families have enjoyed classics like “Do Re Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and “The Lonely Goatherd” for decades.

The production features an incredible cast, including Broadway veteran Monica Wemitt, who portrays Maria with great depth and passion. August Abatecola directs the musical and shared, “We are thrilled to bring this production to life. The music, the cast, and the story come together in a way that we believe will deeply resonate with audiences, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience it.”

The musical also boasts spectacular sets designed by Steven Loftus and beautiful costumes by Emerald City Theatrical, bringing the scenic beauty of Salzburg to life. Choreography by Carrie Silvernail will bring the magic to the stage and have. Plus, a live orchestra conducted by Ricky Romano will make everyone feel like they’re part of the experience.

The show will run for seven performances from March 1 to March 9, giving families plenty of chances to plan a visit soon.

Performance Dates and Showtimes:

Saturday Matinees: 3/1, 3/8 at 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm
Sunday Matinees:  3/2, 3/9 at 1:00 pm
Friday Evening, 3/7 at 7:00 pm

The show will consist of two acts, with a break in between. The estimated running time is about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Concessions, including snacks, beer, and wine, will be available for purchase prior to the performance and during the intermission.
