This year, the Katonah Art Museum is celebrating 40 years of their Young Artists series. Through this series, the Museum features the artistic work of 400 senior student artists from over 40 public and private schools from Dutchess, Fairfield, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties. This includes schools such as Ardsley High School, Bronxville High School, Fox Lane High School, Somers High School, Valhalla High School, White Plains High School, and much more (you can check out the complete list of schools here).

The Young Artists program exemplifies KMA’s dedication to providing dynamic museum education opportunities to its
community and to fostering the next generation of creative thinkers and artists. An impactful program that supports the
growth of student artists, the exhibition plays an integral role in the high school senior experience, providing a unique
opportunity for students who plan to pursue the arts beyond high school.

In addition to displaying the work of High School seniors, the program gives students access to participate in many behind-the-scenes processes. This includes organizing and installing hundreds of pieces in the exhibition and a graphic design workshop – led by Bedford Central School District art educators. Through virtual sessions and an all-day, in-person workshop, students learned about the elements of graphic work as well as completed their own designs. The artwork selected for the 2023 postcard was designed by Fox Lane High School senior Ella Rivard, a participant in the graphic design workshop.

Young Artists 2023 Selection

In January, artworks are selected by teachers and delivered to the KMA. Under the guidance of Museum professionals and a KMA volunteer team, select students representing each school have the ability to explore a curator’s role as they participate in the installation of the exhibition. This process challenges them to consider how to organize and display the hundreds of varied artworks to create a cohesive and pleasing exhibition experience for visitors. As part of this phase, students also learned art installation skills such as measuring, wall hanging, levelling, and the placement of labels. During this experience, the students work alongside professional art installers who support the Museum’s other exhibitions.

The completed exhibition features a range of artwork in scale, concept, media and process. This reflects the diversity of expression among the emerging artists.

Impact of Young Artists

In honor of the 40th anniversary year, KMA will also highlight the impact Young Artists has had on participants and the many paths Young Artists alumni have taken in their lives. The Museum will feature stories, quotes, and photos from Young Artists alumni leading up to the exhibition opening, and throughout the duration of the show. Young Artists alumni are asked to visit the Katonah Museum website or contact Margaret Adasko to share their stories.

For high school seniors, the Young Artists experience lasts a lifetime. Plus, it creates a legacy that has touched, inspired, and connected many generations of young artists in the community.
